Terwijl de Engelse schilder Francis Bacon in 1971 in Parijs de opening van een grote tentoonstelling van zijn werk bijwoont, kijkt zijn geliefde en muse George Dyer terug op de onstuimige jaren die hij met Bacon heeft doorgemaakt. De twee mannen ontmoeten elkaar als Dyer in Bacons atelier inbreekt en op heterdaad betrapt wordt. Dit is het begin van een complexe en soms gevaarlijke liefdesrelatie. Bacon liet zich graag omringen door een kliek van kunstenaars, dronkelappen en hoerenjongens die stuk voor stuk streden om zijn aandacht. Hoe Dryer ook zijn best deed, hij werd er niet in toegelaten. John Maybury's buitengewone studie van Bacon en zijn relatie met Dyer is een krachtig eerbetoon aan één van de grootste en meest omstreden kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw.
