Wanneer het sociale leven op het platteland van India eind jaren negentig uiteenvalt, verhuist journalist Manav Banerjee met zijn zwangere vrouw naar de stad Orissa met de hoop op een beter leven en de belofte van een lucratieve carrière. Wanneer speculatie de kop opsteekt dat de lokale Australische missionaris Graham Staines illegaal leprapatiënten bekeert, stemt Manav toe undercover te gaan voor de krant om een onderzoek in te stellen. Wat hij vindt is een reeks openbaringen die moeilijk te doorgronden zijn en nog moeilijker uit te leggen. Manav wordt gedwongen een keuze te maken tussen zijn eigen ambitie en de waarheid. Uiteindelijk geven zijn acties aanleiding tot een tragische gebeurtenis die over de hele wereld gevoeld wordt.
